Signs God Is Real? Look for the Cookie Dough!

Cookie dough is proof of the existence of God! Well, it’s certainly the evidence by which I know my daughter is present and hard at work.
My daughter, Claudia, loves what she calls “Rumble Rookies.” I believe the actual name is "Crumble Cookies," but her mouth is usually crammed full as she says it. So the mispronunciation has stuck to us all! She bakes them, she eats them, and in doing so, provides an elegant signpost to a greater reality: the active presence of a creator God.
The Everyday Evidence of God’s Presence
The evidence of Claudia's cookie-making is everywhere. You turn on the kitchen tap and get a handful of dough. You open a cupboard and find a sticky, greasy patch. You visit the bathroom—there's cookie dough. I pulled out my laptop at a library hot-desk area, and both it and my pencil case bore the distinct scars of a recent cookie dough encounter.
That’s the big signpost for me. Claudia is nowhere to be seen, but the incontrovertible evidence of her handiwork demonstrates that she’s somewhere around. God is like that, isn’t he?
Answering Doubt: Is God Really There?
I find the old Ronald Reagan joke helpful when exploring the idea of a Creator:
“I have a good mind to invite these fellows who don’t believe in God to enjoy a gourmet meal with me… Then I’ll ask them, which of you doesn’t believe in a Chef?”
This is a gentle pointer to the reality of a Creator God.
However, a more common experience, especially for those of us who profess faith—and I speak as a Christian—is the nagging fear that God may not be real. The query is suppressed by distraction or fear, but it returns. If you are struggling with Christian doubt, please know you are not alone. These questions are healthy; they keep us looking for the "signposts."
When You Feel Alone: The Chaos on Lake Gennesaret
I was recently examining the story of Jesus walking on Lake Gennesaret. In this story, the disciples were rowing through the night, exhausted and battling a fierce headwind. Crucially, they knew Christ wasn't physically with them.
That feeling—that Christ is not with us—is a common human experience. Maybe through humility or doubt, we struggle to confidently assert that Christ is with us. It feels bold. Yet, this bold assertion is precisely what God invites us to make. He wants us to know that Christ is with us!
The Christ he wants you to know, however, is not just the cosy comforter. God the Father wants you to know that the Jesus who is with you is the Creator of all things, even when you don’t think he’s there.
The Creator Walking Over the Water
When the disciples were in the middle of that chaotic, black sea, Christ appeared, walking over the waters. It's an image that evokes the first words of Genesis:
Now the earth was chaos and waste, darkness was on the surface of the deep, and the Ruach Elohim was hovering upon the surface of the water. (Genesis 1:2 TLV)
The moment convinced them of his divinity. When you feel like you are alone in the middle of chaos, you need to know that Jesus the Creator God is with you.
What Kind of God Is Present?
We see this same powerful presence on the road to Emmaus after the crucifixion. For those two heart-broken followers, all hope was lost. They walked with the risen Jesus but didn't realise it was him. They thought the one in whom they had placed all their trust was gone - but he was right there with them! Jesus walked with them—not just comforting Jesus, but vanquisher of death Jesus. Not just happy memories Jesus, but destroyer of death Jesus, the victor over the grave. That Jesus.
When I don't see my Cookie Dough Claudia, I wear the sugary stains of her certain existence and work. So too, even when I don't feel Christ is there, he is. And he’s not just "nice Jesus," "kind and comforting Jesus," but the sovereign, creator God; the Vanquisher of the grave! That Jesus. Powerful Jesus - he can get Cookie Dough anywhere Jesus!
When I doubt his help, his kindness or even his existence, I can know this, whether I feel or believe it: He is real, present and powerful! He stands with me, shoulder to shoulder!
